How did King Yeongjo become king?

King Yeongjo was born to the 21st king and Sukbin Choi from Musuri. King Yeongjo was born as the second son and became king as the king's half-brother, not the king's son. In other words, King Yeongjo, the half-sister of King Gyeongjong, became king. At that time, it was common for a crown prince to become king when his father, the king's son, died. However, King Yeongjo became the first case of the king's brother becoming a king. This meant that King Sukjong's son became king twice in a row.

Yeoning-gun (Youngjo's childhood name) was raised with the love of King Sukjong and Sukbin Choi. However, those who didn't like the warning wanted to be the annual crown prince. King Gyeongjong was persecuted by his subjects and had no children to inherit the throne. So he pressured Yeon-ing to ascend the throne. However, Yeon-ing told his officials, 'I don't want to be a crown prince,' and the officials went wild. And Yeoning-gun informed King Gyeongjong of the forces that wanted to drive out the alarm. He then suggested to King Gyeongjong that he should abandon his subjects, but King Gyeongjong rejected it.

Then Yeon-ing said, "Then I won't be a crown prince," and King Gyeong-jong had no choice but to execute his officials. And Yeon-ing thought he was safe, but he was driven to a reverse hat and faced a death crisis. So Yeon-ing cried and said, 'The sinner cannot be a crown prince,' and King Gyeong-jong defended Yeon-ing. And when King Gyeongjong passed away, Yeoning-gun ascended to the throne as King Yeongjo.

the glorious achievements of King Yeongjo

King Yeongjo created an institution and organization in which the people of Joseon could be respected as human rights. The government has encouraged the state to cut back by abolishing harsh punishments that punish the lower class and banning luxury and waste. And it has revived a newspaper system that encourages people to strive for agriculture and directly informs their grievances. This newspaper system is also useful in modern society. It reduced the tax burden on the people and imposed different obligations on the state depending on their status.

In addition, a separate past examination was created and implemented for the elderly in their 60s (it seems to be a better system for welfare than modern society). King Yeongjo liked to study, so he wrote his own book and improved his printing skills. So King Yeongjo made all the people like books and tried to read them to their heart's content. In addition, competent silhak scholars were discovered to develop society, culture, and industry.

In July 38, King Yeongjo ordered the 27-year-old Crown Prince Sado to enter the douju (a square box made of logs for grain). Prince Sado starved to death in a dungeon. At that time, it was the summer of July in Korea, and Crown Prince Sado died on the eighth day of imprisonment.

Why did King Yeongjo kill his only heir and son so cruelly? King Yeongjo lost his first son in an accident, and at the age of 42, he gained chastity. King Jeongjo is highly anticipated, and as soon as he is one year old, he is given the title of crown prince. Therefore, expectations for King Jeongjo were really high, and it is evaluated that he was mentally abused, such as rebuking or meaningless persecution of King Jeongjo. So King Jeongjo was scared to the point of shaking just by looking at his father.

King Jeongjo got mental illness, called in gisaengs to enjoy drinking and dancing, and even killed people indiscriminately. So King Yeongjo scolded King Jeongjo more and pressured him. It is said that King Yeongjo gave King Jeongjo only the name "Sado." King Yeongjo ordered Crown Prince Sado to enter the douche because he could not get blood on his hands. King Yeongjo did not listen to the son of Crown Prince Sado when he begged, "Please forgive my father and save him." King Yeongjo sent his son away like that. Later, the evaluation of King Yeongjo is remembered as the king who made many achievements and the king who made the rare event.
